First Post! Spaghetti Bread

Category:

So, my first post since deciding to create this blog. Hmmm.. Intimidating. I'll try to live up to all the expectations.

If we haven't been properly introduced, check out the "Me and My Kitchen" page.

I'm already a little behind. I cooked this meal two nights ago (oops). In my defense, I was busy setting the site up.

Looking through these pictures I realize I need to break out my DSLR camera. But isn't just using the iPhone camera so convenient? Le sigh, I guess I'll pull it out of the coffee table and really put the effort in.

Anyway, so on to what you really want to see....

It's a pretty simple recipe. You'll need these ingredients:

  • Pizza Dough (I used a can)
  • Spaghetti
  • 1 Can or 1/2 jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce (I used a can I picked up from Aldi, and I wish now I would have splurged for Prego or something similar)
  • 1 cup Mozzarella, shredded or cubes
  • 1 Tblspn Italian Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • Optional: 1lb Ground beef or vegetarian substitute
Step One: Preheat your oven to 375. Prepare your spaghetti in a pot on your stovetop. Let the spaghetti cook until it is just done, or maybe even still just a little hard on the inside. It doesn't need to be all the way done because we are also going to bake it.

Step Two: This step is optional. If you like your spaghetti "meaty," now would be the time to heat your ground beef in a greased pan, while you're waiting for your oven to preheat and your spaghetti to cook. Cook until browned, and set aside.

Step Three: Once your spaghetti has softened, take it off heat, drain, and mix spaghetti sauce and optional meat (if you chose to make it).

Step Four: On a greased cookie sheet, flatten out your pizza dough into a large rectangle. Use a knife to cut lines on the sides, but be careful not to cut the center. Leave space for your spaghetti mixture.

Step Five: Carefully spoon your spaghetti mixture to the center of the dough (the uncut part). Add your cheese to the top and carefully fold over your dough strips.

Step Six: In a small bowl, melt your butter. Add your italian seasoning and brush the mixture on the top. This step can be left out, but it makes the dough less like "pizza dough," and more like italian or garlic bread. You could probably even add a little garlic powder and cheese to the mixture to make it like real garlic bread (I'll probably do this next time).

Step Seven: Bake until dough is thoroughly cooked/browned. About 20-25 minutes.

Step Eight: Slice and Serve! Enjoy!

We sliced and served with classic Texas Toast (a hubby fav).

I prepared Chris for this unique dish over the phone on his way home from work. The conversation went a little like this:

Me: "Almost home? Dinner smells great."

Hubby: "What's for dinner?"

Me: "Spaghetti bread." (I explain the concept)

Hubby: "..... So.... It's like pizza bread? Do you pull it apart?"

Long story short, he liked it after trying it. He agreed that next time we should aim to make the bread more like garlic bread. Then we could probably make this sans Texas Toast.
