Me and My Kitchen

About Me

Thanks for checking out my blog! My name is Jerie, and I'm a recent college grad from KY. My husband and I just moved to the Windy City so that I could attend Graduate School this fall. My husband is a tech-savvy operations manager for a very popular electronic company.

Why do you post your husband's reactions to your cooking?
Put simply, because he's funny. He doesn't mean to be, but he is. You could say this blog is sort of our adventure of becoming more cultured. I'm coking new foods, and he's giving me an honest opinion about what he likes/dislikes.

What's with the name?
This was the response that started it all. I had been thinking about starting a food blog because I have been enjoying the craft so much lately, but I wasn't exactly sure what would set me apart from other food blogs. I have little-to-none of my own creativity when it comes to food. I'm being 100% honest when I say all these recipes were found on Pinterest and tweaked to our liking. Anyway, one night I made Creamy Tomato Tortellini Soup, and in response to the Tortellini, Chris (my husband) says, "What are these floaty things?" As I stopped laughing, I realized this was what my blog needed - some down-to-Earth humor about cooking and marriages.

Why don't you cook dishes with meat?
I'm a vegetarian, so most of my dishes will contain no meat. My husband; however, is not. Therefore, I try to use the best substitute I can. If you're a vegetarian, great! You can follow the directions as I've written them. Not a vegetarian? No problem! Just substitute my "substitution" with your meat of choice (no judging here!).

Our Kitchen

You may ask: "Why are you showing us a picture of your kitchen?"
It's a fair question. I simply wanted you to see what I'm working with. It's not very large and I don't have fancy stand-up mixers or the like. You'll from the picture that my small appliances consist of a deep fryer and a toaster. In the cabinets somewhere I have a crockpot, a blender, and a small.... I mean SMALL food processor.

I just wanted you to know that it's possible to work with your surroundings. You don't have to have fancy equipment (it's great if you do have those things, though).

Also, I'm just darn proud of my kitchen ;)

Being in a small, 1 bedroom apartment in the city, I have to improvise and make some space. Here's one way I did it. Instead of taking up a whole shelve of counter space for all my spices, I got these nifty spice hooks for the inside of my cabinet. Great space saver trick.

Every week or so I make out a menu for the week - week and a half so I can prepare by buying the things I'll need. I decided recently to print it all out on a calendar for the fridge. It makes it easier for when I forget what I'm supposed to cook that day, and it's a neat way for my husband to see what he's having for dinner and some events throughout the month.
His reaction to the calendar? "Isn't that more for you though? So I'll stop asking you everyday what we're having?"
He isn't wrong.
:)

So that's me and my kitchen! As a bonus, here's our happy addition, Lily.
