This recipe, like the Cauliflower Soup, makes a hearty amount of servings. You could easily serve a family of 4 with this dish. My husband and I ate on it for dinner the night I made it, and both lunch and dinner the next day. I think my husband even took it for lunch at work the day after that.
It's a pretty simple dish, and very tasty. It has some characteristics of lasagna, such as that meaty and hearty Italian taste, and a variety of layers.
Ingredients:
- 1lb (1 box) of dry ziti pasta
- 1 medium onion (yellow), chopped
- 1 1/2 - 2 jars of your favorite red pasta (spaghetti) sauce
- 1 lb of your choice of meat (I used 1/2 soyrizo and 1/2 imitation sausage)
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 1/2 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
- 8-9 slices of provolone cheese
- 1 cup sour cream
- 8oz (1 bag) of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
Step one: Preheat oven to 350. Prepare your ziti in a pot of boiling water. Cook to al dente.
Step two: Chop your onion. In a large saucepan, heat your meat of choice, onion, and minced garlic.
Step three: Once meat has slightly browned, add your jars of spaghetti sauce and Italian seasoning. Stir.
Step four: Once your pasta has cooked, drain and spoon 1/2 of it into a greased baking dish.
Step five: Layer 1/2 of your meat/sauce mixture on top of the ziti noodles.
Step six: Place your provolone cheese slices onto the mixture. You may have to break some in half to cover the dish completely.
Step seven: Spread your sour cream on top of your cheese slices.
Step eight: Spoon your remaining noodles on top of the sour cream, and then the rest of your meat/sauce mixture on top of the noodles again.
Step nine: Your final layer is cheese. Spread the entire bag of mozzarella on top of the dish. Lastly, sprinkle the parmesan cheese on top of that.
Step ten: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for 10 additional minutes.
Step eleven: Allow to cool several minutes before serving. Enjoy!
I think the fact that we ate this for three consecutive meals speaks for itself. It was a great dish.
My husband really likes lasagna, so this recipe was great for him. He even suggested I take the night off from cooking last night and have leftovers instead! Ha!
